Study Information

New Zealand Clinical Research is investigating whether performing lumbar punctures with different timed intervals makes a difference to results.

A lumbar puncture (also known as a spinal tap) is an approved medical procedure most commonly used to collect cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), which is the fluid that flows in and around your brain and spinal cord and is used to diagnose a range of central nervous system disorders, such as meningitis. A lumbar puncture is taken by inserting a hollow needle into the space surrounding your spinal column (subarachnoid space) in the lower back to withdraw some CSF samples.

There is some evidence to suggest that the interval time between getting lumbar punctures taken may affect biomarkers (a biological molecule found in in the body that is a sign of a normal or abnormal process, condition or diseases). This is important because the results from the biomarker samples may be distorted if the lumbar punctures are taken too close together.

The researchers are investigating whether the time interval between each lumbar puncture makes a difference to the biomarker results in the CSF and blood.
