Study Information

New Zealand Clinical Research is trialling an investigational medication that is being developed for the treatment of chronic and acute-post operative pain.

STC-004 is being developed for the treatment of chronic (continuous and long lasting) pain and for acute post-operative pain (pain that occurs after surgery). Chronic pain affects approximately 20% of New Zealanders. Commonly used pain relief medications (for example paracetamol) are not very effective in treating chronic pain and when used long term can have harmful side effects. Opioids are a group of drugs that are often used to treat chronic and acute post-operative pain, but they have negative side effects such as nausea and they can slow down breathing to dangerously low levels. Opioids are very addictive and people can become dependent on them. Therefore, there is a need to develop new pain medication with a similar therapeutic effect, but without the dangerous side effects and addiction.

STC-004 works by blocking channels in the nervous system. It is hoped that by blocking these specific channels, STC-004 will be able to reduce pain signals. STC-004 therefore may be an effective non-opioid treatment for chronic and acute post-operative pain.

It is an investigational drug because it has not been approved by MedSafe or other drug regulatory authorities.
